Eben Sadie wordt gerekend tot de pioniers in de Zuid-Afrikaanse wijnbouw. Door zijn inzicht kan gezegd worden, dat de regio Swartland in een geheel ander daglicht kwam te staan. Het was Eben, die hier de oudere wijngaarden vond en er zijn befaamde Columella en Palladius maakte. Nu echter komt hij ook met een serie wijnen, die ook wel de “Ouwingerdreeks” wordt genoemd. Een serie wijnen van wijngaarden met zeer oude wijnstokken en de wijnen die ervan gemaakt worden, zijn verbluffend. Door lage rendementen en het vakmanschap van Eben Sadie, is een nieuwe serie topwijnen geboren.

VINIFICATION | Sorting was done by hand and then the juice was extracted by barefoot stomping of the whole bunches in bins. After fermentation the grapes were fortified on the skins with ove-year-old brandy spirits and then pressed in a vertical basket press. One of the most important aspects in the production of a fortified wine is to pick the grapes at the perfect moment and not over-ripe, as the retention of natural acidity is critical. The balance between the natural sugar retained, the tannin extraction and the nal potential alcohol level post-fortification is a mystical equation and if met, it simply produces one of the greatest expressions in the world of wine.
AGEING | Aged for 12 years in Old Portugese Pipes. NOTES | The 2008 Cape Tawny Fortified had the benefit of input from a family with a history in the making of port: the Niepoort Family has been producing fortified wines for a couple of centuries now and their understanding of these wines is profound. It has been a great process of discovery to make this wine together with them.
This release is a limited production and therefore highly collectable, but more important than that: it was made and bottled to be enjoyed and to be shared with friends.
